Pettigala Mountain Hike and Bambaragala Raja Maha Viharaya in Digana

Pettigala is a widely popular place in the recent past. I saw many travel lovers has visited this place and shared some amazing photos to their social media channels. Not only travel destination, it’s an important as a Religious and Historical place. This little mountain is situated in Kandy district of Sri Lanka. Due to its nice panoramic view, many travelers’ visits here to experience that.

Location

Pettigala and Bambaragala Raja Maha Viharaya is located 20 km away from the world heritage Kandy City. It’s a single little mountain with the elevation of 760 m. Bambaragala Temple is situated in the bottom part of the mountain and the big stone in the top called ‘Pettigala’. Before reaching this place, you should first come to the Digana town in A26 road. Distance to Digana from Kandy is about 15 km.

There are so many public transport busses available from Kandy to reach Digana town. You can find a bus for every 10 minutes from the Kandy Clock Tower. It takes 40 minutes to come to Digana. After that, you have to hire a ‘Tuk’ to reach the Bambaragala Raja Maha Viharaya. Its 5 km away from Digana and will take 15 minutes to reach. There are parking facilities available for private vehicles also.

Bambaragala Ancient Temple

Bambaragala Temple or Locals called ‘Bambaragala Raja Maha Viharaya’ is a historical valuable place. Some sources tell that this temple and its surrounded area contain 79 ancient caves. These caves were made by ancient monks in 2-3 centuries in A.C. ‘Indrasala Guhava’ and ‘Sithuwam Lena’ are some popular caves that will meet when you are trekking to pettigala mountain. Some locals believe Lord Buddha has visited and took rest in the Indrasala Guhava. But there are no written evidences about the tail. Sithuvam Lena is a nice place that contains some ancient paintings.

When you start to walk to the pettigala, you will first enter into the Bambaragala New temple. You will then reach the Bambaragala Old temple after it. The old Temple contains some beautiful paintings with old buildings. These paintings were made by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe in the 18th century. Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe ruled the Kandyan Kingdom and helped this temple to develop. You are not allowed to take any photos of ancient paintings due to its historical value.

Hike to Pettigala

The hike will start from Bambaragala Old Temple. First, you will enter to a forest area. It contains a nice footpath with rocky outcrops. Easy to find direction and this is not a hard hike. Moderately difficult and feel less tired. There are some viewpoints in a few places, and it’s awesome to take a rest with drinks. Don’t forget to take leach protections in rainy days. You will find above-mentioned Indrasala Guhava and Sithuvam Lena during the Hike. The later part of the hike is a little hard to climb and will feel enjoy after reach to the top of the mountain. It will take one hour to complete the whole hike. You can view a 360 degree view at the top of the mountain and that picture will definitely amaze you. Pettigala is a big stone in the top of the mountain, and you have to walk a few meters to reach it.

Panaoramic View

Due to its alone, anybody can see a panoramic view at the top of the pettigala. Victoria Reservior is at the bottom of the mountain. You can see some great pictures of Victoria Reservior that spread along the mahaweli river. During the rainless period, you can see the old Teldeniya Town after getting water loss in Victoria Reservior. The Teldeniya old town was fully covered by the Victoria reservoir in the 1985. But then the town was moved to a new location.

Other than that, Knuckles mountain range and Its peaks can be easily visible. You can watch a large area of famous Knuckle range from here. Alagalla, Hunnasgiriya, Medamahanuwara, five peaks of Knuckles, Gombaniya, Yakunge hela are the same of the peaks that can be easily identified. Narampanawa, rangala, Thangappuwa, Bambarella Senarathwela, Rajawella, Wegala are some villages around the Pettigala mountain.

You can see another amazing view from the top with the evening sunset. It’s the ideal time to take photos. Any traveler will love to take photos around the top. There is some space available to walk around the top part of the mountain.

Other Important Facts

Pettigala is not only a travel destination. So, you should remember it as a religious and historical place. The traveler should not bring liquor and other drugs to this area. It’s important to follow religious ethics when entering into the Bambaragala Temple. As well as you should not bring polythene and other plastics and throw them around the forest. Always keep clean the place.
